What States Can Learn from Early Reviews of ESSA State Plans

Sixteen states and the District of Columbia have submitted their ESSA accountability plans to the U.S. Department of Education, and the remainder will do so in September. The department gave initial feedback to eight states earlier this summer, and Bellwether Education Partners – in partnership with the Collaborative for Student Success – recently released their independent peer review of the 17 state plans.

Join NASBE on July 25, 2017, from 3:00 to 4:00 pm (EDT) for a webinar exploring the ESSA plans. Which of the state plans receive high marks for their bold and innovative strategies? What are the trends across states’ plans? How can policymakers use reviewers’ feedback to make improvements to their state plan? What is the process and purpose behind external reviews of state plans? We will talk with Bellwether’s Chad Aldeman about the results of the independent review. We will also hear insights from Kirsten Carr of the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), Mike Petrilli of the Fordham Institute, and Ashlee Schmidt of the U.S. Department of Education.
