Teachers and other stakeholders often ask, “How can I get more instructionally useful information from assessments?” This first session of our Assessment and Accountability NASBE Member Learning Series, led by the Center for Assessment’s Scott Marion, Chris Domaleski, and Carla Evans, focused on the characteristics and features of tests that are best suited to guide instruction (spoiler: it’s not the state summative), as well as essential practices of leveraging assessment, curriculum, and instruction to promote student learning.
The session explored:
- different types of assessments, and which are well suited to inform instruction;
- the five essential features of assessment for learning and how to promote them; and
- balanced systems of assessment.
