NASBE Appreciates USED’s Extension on ARP Liquidation for School Construction

Earlier this year, NASBE co-signed a letter led by AASA, The Superintendent’s Association, asking Education Secretary Miguel Cardona for clarity on extending the timeline school districts have to expend funding for school construction and capital projects under the American Rescue Plan. On Friday, May 13, 2022, the U.S. Department of Education responded to this request.

NASBE is encouraged by this development, with President and CEO Paolo DeMaria noting:

We appreciate the U.S. Department of Education’s considerations for extending the liquidation timeline for school construction and capital improvement projects under the American Rescue Plan. Reflecting a commitment to listen and respond to issues raised by state, district, and school leaders, this decision helps ensure that districts can deal with the practical realities of supply-chain disruptions and contractor availability associated with capital improvements. The department’s collaboration with education leaders is essential to ensuring that ARP funds are wisely invested to benefit students and their communities for years to come.
