NASBE selected to lead Hawaii State Superintendent of Education Search
Alexandria, VA – The Hawaii State Board of Education has selected the National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE) to lead its search for the position of State Superintendent of Education to lead the Hawaii State Department of Education and the statewide system of public schools.
The Hawaii board is a member of NASBE, the only membership organization for state boards of education. NASBE is experienced in chief executive searches and has successfully completed recent executive searches and/or evaluations for state boards in Georgia and Mississippi.
“The selection of the state chief is one of the most important responsibilities a state board has, particularly in this unprecedented time. Ensuring a strong relationship between the board and chief from the very start is critical to ensuring equity and excellence for all students in a state,” said Paolo DeMaria, NASBE President and CEO. “NASBE has a demonstrated process for supporting state boards in selecting their state chief, and we are excited to work with the Hawaii board to find its next state superintendent.”
“We have been eager to get this search underway,” said Catherine Payne, chairperson of the Hawaii state board and the board’s search committee. “The process has been great, and the thoughtful, deliberate stakeholder engagement has been particularly important. We are confident in NASBE’s abilities to lead us to a successful outcome.”
The state superintendent of education serves as the chief executive officer of Hawaii’s unitary public school system—which is a single, statewide school district—and is responsible for both the State Education Agency (SEA) and Local Education Agency (LEA) functions of the state department of education. The successful candidate will be paid a competitive salary, commensurate with preparation, qualifications, experience, and proven record of transformational leadership, as well as the State of Hawaii benefits package. The Hawaii state board governs the state department of education and is empowered by the state constitution to formulate statewide education policy and appoint the Superintendent. NASBE serves as the only membership organization for state boards of education. A nonpartisan, nonprofit organization, NASBE elevates state board members’ voices in national and state policymaking, facilitates the exchange of informed ideas, and supports members in advancing equity and excellence in public education for students of all races, genders, and circumstances.
