Vision:

Prevent Blindness America provides guidelines for vision screening in the school setting in their Position Statement - Model State School-Entry Vision Screening Legislation.

The National Association of School Nurses provides guidelines for vision screening in To See or Not to see: Screening the Vision of Children in School (2005).

Hearing:
American Speech Language Hearing Association recommends that school age children should be screened at the following times: (1) On first entry into school, (2) Every year from kindergarten through 3rd grade, (3) In 7 th and 11th grade, (4) Upon entrance into special education, (5) Upon grade repetition, (7) Upon entering a new school system without evidence of having passed a previous hearing screening.

BMI:
The Institute of Medicine recommends schools determine annual each student's BMI percentile and make information available to the parents.

The CDC produced Body Mass Index Measurement in Schools to describe the purpose of school-based BMI surveillance and screening programs, examine current practices, and review research on BMI measurement programs.  Based upon the evidence, student BMI surveillance is beneficial to produce prevalence and trend data on obesity among a populations of students.  However, there is not enough evidence to recommend for or against school-based BMI screening in schools.

The American Heart Association does not recommend BMI screening programs unless there is careful consideration of critical issues. (Policy Position Statement on Body Mass Index (BMI) surveillance and assessment in schools - 2008)
